Lots happening today!
First, Edmonton pulled the plug on Devan Dubnyk. It was time. I like the guy and he definitely has some skill, but he just didn't do enough this year to earn the number one job. I'm not saying Bryz is deserving either, but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. Duby goes off to Smashville for fourth line grinder Matt Hendricks, an aging forward with solid speed and PK ability who bring a lot of intangibles. His contract is a little lengthy, although that's not the end of the world right now. Slap him on the third or fourth line with a combination of Smyth, Gordon and other parts and you have the beginnings of something. Not sure what yet..
A little bit after that MacTavish sent a third rounder to the Kings for Ben Scrivens, a 27 year old back up goalie who's been posting some great numbers. If he can't grab the reigns, at least he'll form a solid tandem with Bryz. Honestly, I like the moves made today. Maybe we didn't 'win' these trades, but we certainly haven't lost them yet. In the end, I think a bit of a shake up was necessary and there may be more coming. Welcome to the Oilers, Ben and Matt!
The BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects game is tonight, 7 pm mountain time at the Saddledome in Calgary.I am thrilled to be attending and I can't wait to watch these guys play live! There's a lot of intriguing players taking part in this game. I'm disappointed that Sam Bennett won't be available, but so it goes. The upper echelon of talent in this game consists of Sam Reinhart, Aaron Ekblad, Leon Draisaitl and Michael Dal Colle, but guys like Roland McKeown, Jake Virtanen, Conner Bleackley, Haydn Fleury, Brendan Perlini and more will also look to impress. I'm curious to see how Blake Clarke performs, as his numbers have been far from impressive this year, as with Matt Mistele. It's gonna be a great game! Who will you be cheering for? Team Cherry or Team Orr?
Enjoy your day! -Johannes
